New York

You've probably heard Jay Z's song Empire State of Mind.

In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made, oh
There's nothing you can't do, now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you, let's hear it for New York
New York, New York

Personally, I never really understood why New York is so overrated. It's dirty, noisy, hot and humid, crowded, ridiculously expensive. The first time I was there, it was December, so the cold eliminated all the smells. Now, at around 35 degrees Celsius, walking around was a real test for the nose (especially if it's super sensitive like mine); urine, vomit, garbage, cars, perfume, sweat, food... it was a nightmare! New Yorkers must really be immune to all kinds of diseases with that kind of daily exposure to filth.

Anyway, ignoring the heat as much as we could, we managed to do quite a few things during the week we spent there.

Today, I'm going to show you snapshots of Central Park, which is a real oasis and a shelter from all the city madness.

Stay tuned for more pictures... This is going to be New York Week here at Sexta-feira.

  1. Aw, Central Park looks gorgeous! Maybe it's cliche to want to go there, but cliche shouldn't be bad. A lot of people though, you'd almost forget it's a park!

You know, Evi, I really look forward to each of your posts. I feel like, through your blog, I get to visit and experience the US, something I've always wanted to do... Someday I'll definitely go there!

RYCs: Thank you for your encouragements, Evi. Whether it's my thesis, job hunt, the whole driving issue (I have an appointment with an instructor tomorrow, by the way) or just my general well-being, you're always there for me. You're great! :D

    1. I strongly believe that cliches aren't always bad!

Thank you for your kind words Bibi! All you have to do is start saving money and then start looking for tickets until you find the right price. My sister managed to travel here 2 years ago, without even having a proper job. She saved and saved and then one day she found a great ticket price.

Thank you for being so sweet! I've told you you remind me of me, so when you get stressed out or worried I feel like I've already been there and I MUST tell you everything is going to be fine, because I know it! I really want to know how things with your instructor went. :)

Hope you're having a good day!

  4. New York is on my wishlist of cities to visit. Considering its size, the US doesn't have that many for me - maybe San Francisco and Chicago too. I love the pictures.

    1. San Francisco is heaven compared to NY. The West Coast is much prettier than the East Coast in my opinion. But, you know, Washington DC which is the closest to where I live is a very pretty town, too.

I want to do that famous road trip across the country-that's on my wishlist.

  7. Your point of view of view about NY being over-rated would be echoed by my travelling partner of a number of years ago (plus "the people are very ignorant" was another complaint!) - but me - I love it and would be back there in a heart-beat! We travelled in the States via Newark airport last year and I had my nose pressed against the window of the airport lounge - pining as I stared ahead at the Empire State Building etc. A stop over was suggested by me but same travelling partner wasn't for it - so I lost!

I'll be back...... (minus usual travelling partner!)

    1. My husband would agree with you. He kept saying "wouldn't it be great to have an apartment here?" and I kept answering "no, this city stinks (literally and metaphorically)".
I'd rather travel to California next time. :)

    2. Sounds like we should swap travelling companions occasionally - well for the NY trips anyway!!

  8. Beautiful pictures! I guess I've never thought about the realities of a big city - the smell...the garbage... it does appear that Central Park is the oasis in all of that.
I've wanted to visit New York as well - I always think back to the movie "Home Alone: Lost in New York" and Central Park at Christmas time. I loved that movie as a kid haha.
Great post. Looking forward to taking a peek at the following posts!

    1. Thanks!
      The heat made everything worse...
This is the thing with NY, we've all seen so many movies taking place there that we have idealized a chaotic city. Don't get me started on Sex and the City. I do believe it's highly unrealistic no matter how fun to watch!
