the last Saturday of 2013

A walk at National Harbor...

It's too bad that this brilliant work of art is used as a playground.

It's funny too; a sandier version of Gulliver's Travels.

Then off to Loudoun County, Virginia, for some wine tasting.

Have an amazing Sunday!
Remember, it's the last Sunday of the year!

  10. You know, I kinda like that it attracts so many people! Art shouldn't be all shut off from society, hung up behind glass or fenced up in a museum. It should be lived and experienced! Maybe the kids climbing that arm will have fond memories of it, and might protect it if it were to be threatened with demolition. You never know. :D

(I know what I'm saying is controversial, as we all know it will wear the artwork down, being used as a play set. But, you know, everything has its pros and cons.)

    1. I see your point! But I still think that it loses some of its grandeur when children are climbing and crawling all over it and their parents are standing aside holding their jackets.

It looks much better like that:

  12. Do you think it's a shame it's used a playground? I think a lot of what's considered 'fine art' is too stuffy and inaccessible for children, and adults are too quick to dismiss what they might consider art (their computer games, music, comics, etc) as rubbish. I like the idea of combining art with something children can engage with, have fun with, etc. There are limits, of course - I don't want anyone drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa, but I love that physical engagement with the hardier forms of art as you've shown here : o )

I don't even think that most of the children that climb on the sculpture know that they're climbing on a sculpture, but anyway, that's my personal opinion.

Have I shown you this site before? It's great to use with children. And if you don't like modern art or these three specific works of art, you can always play with one you choose. I usually chose more realistic paintings depending on my students' age and level of English. (Modern Art depresses me most of the times).

    2. Oh come now, Evi! How do you know not one of those children went home and said: "Daddy, Daddy! Wasn't it amazing how that hand was a metaphor for the socialist state, supporting the lifeblood of the future - us children - with it's firm hand of ..."

      OK ... maybe not ...

That looks like a great site - I'll have to have some fun with it with my daughter. Thank you!
